ROS News for the week of July 20th, 2026
I’ve had quite the week! In the past seven days, I’ve been to Open Sauce, AMD’s developer conference, and now I’m at Teardown in Portland. It might have also been my birthday this week. ![]()
I’ve run into so many fantastic people building wonderful ROS robots, including a working Johnny 5 replica, a giant art robot with cast aluminum components, a hexapod with a 25 kg payload, a room full of SO-101s, a controllable robot tentacle running Kilted, and the wonderful folks at the Neobotics Foundation. It has been wild!
I have tried to distill some of the projects below. If you are in the Portland area and want to chat, @vmb and I will be at Teardown all weekend.

The Nav2 crew have a really phenomenal post on how various compute platforms perform on simulated navigation benchmarks. It is absolutely worth a read!

Looking for a faster way to make stereo depth images? Check out this ROS 2 Jazzy workspace for real-time stereo-rectified depth estimation from both pinhole and wide-FOV camera pairs, using a TensorRT-accelerated port of Fast-FoundationStereo.
Our build farmers
are the folks who do the difficult job of building, testing, and distributing the ROS binary packages that make our lives easier. Every time you run sudo apt install ros2-jazzy-* you are benefiting from the countless hours they put into making sure ROS source code gets turned into machine code that you can just run on your robot without compilation. Our Infrastructure team just released a slick new dashboard that tells you what ROS and Gazebo packages have failing tests and builds so that package maintainers can quickly find and fix issues.
ROS Infrastructure improvements like this help keep your robot up to date and the overall project secure. However, the compute we use for the ROS Build Farm is not free. We have AWS bills just like everyone else working in robotics. If you would like to support efforts like these and help keep the Build Farm sustainable, consider talking to your employer about joining the OSRA.
