ROS (2) M Name Brainstorming

With ROS Lyrical Luth branching off Rolling this week, it’s an excellent time to start thinking about where we’ll be a year from now: in the midst of preparing the ROS M release! To get there, the first thing we need to do is pick a name.

Following tradition, the next ROS release name will be an adjective starting with M followed by a turtle-related word or name, also starting with M.

Here are the existing ROS 2 names.

After “Lyrical”, it can only be “Musical”. It also plays nicely with the “melodic” from ROS 1. Let’s use the same turtle, then.

Also, from the last PMC meeting, we saw that we have a lot of PMC members named Michael / Miguel, and today is the anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes.

After a bit of deliberation between “Minty” and “Maroon” I propose:

Maroon Manouria

Modular Manouria — inspired by ROS 2 modular node-based architecture, where every component is independent and reusable.

Multimodal Manouria — reflecting the multi-sensor fusion era of modern robotics: LiDAR, cameras, IMU and more working together.

Methodical Matamata — a nod to the rigorous, systematic approach that good robotics engineering requires.

Mechatronic Mauremys — celebrating the fusion of mechanics, electronics and software at the heart of every robot.

Milestone Macrochelys — because every “M” release marks a significant milestone in the ROS 2 journey.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Some people seem to be very into typing and very long package names.

A few shorter adjectives for brevity’s sake: Mute, Meek, Moist, Mid (ha!), Moody, Mossy, Mousy
