Hi Gazebo Community!
This week’s meeting was held on 2026-07-06T18:00:00Z and the following is a summary:
PMC Business
- None
New agenda items
- PR Review Maintenance Hour: The PMC agreed to establish a recurring maintenance hour (held roughly twice a month and rotating across time zones including APAC) where maintainers can meet via breakout rooms to collaboratively review pull requests.
- SDFormat Namespace Placeholder Syntax: Discussed options (
__name__,$name,{name},{{name}},$(var name)) for a newnamespaceattribute placeholder syntax in SDFormat (see the Zulip discussion). A final choice on the syntax is deferred pending further prototype review. Regarding backporting, the consensus is to avoid backporting to Fortress and target Harmonic, while coordinating with the ROS team regarding vendor packages to ensure compatibility. Please chime in on the Zulip thread if you have any opinions. - AI-Assisted Contributions & Attribution Policy: Discussed adopting the ROS Guidelines for AI-Assisted Contributions and switching to
Assisted-by:attribution instead ofGenerated-by:(proposed in gazebosim/.github#19). Reviewers are encouraged to enforce filling out PR templates to ensure human dialogue with authors, and maintainers may close PRs submitted without human interaction. There was active debate regarding legal liabilities, copyright responsibility, and the risk of automated scrapers inappropriately flagging projects based on AI keywords in commit messages. Further discussions will take place with the OSRA regarding whether to adjust commit message attribution requirements.
Updates
Infrastructure & Buildfarm
- Buildfarm Status: The buildfarm is stable with green builds consistently above 90% (see the Greenness report and buildfarm issue triage). Recently, agents were affected by bot scraping which took them down; a fix is currently being finalized.
Performance
- GUI Profiling Report: A comprehensive Gazebo GUI profiling report was presented during the meeting, highlighting recommendations focused on rendering thread bottlenecks (such as using boolean flags for pre-rendering updates, removing unnecessary shared pointers, and eliminating extra casting operations). The PMC discussed architectural ideas like running the GUI and simulation in the same process to reduce transport serialization costs and GPU memory usage, but agreed to focus on targeted, low-hanging performance improvements first.
As always, the meeting notes are available at
