Hi Gazebo Community!

This week’s meeting was held on 2026-06-08T18:00:00Z and the following is a summary:

PMC Business

  • A formal vote will be initiated via email to sponsor a new committer for a mentorship period.

New agenda items

  • Discussed the strategy for upgrading Gazebo’s rendering from Ogre 2.3 to Ogre 3.0 (gz-rendering#1289 and discussion comments). The team concluded that they are not ready to pull the trigger on this work yet as the required review is non-trivial. While still evaluating next steps, the team is weighing whether to instead focus exclusively on Bevy integration, which is on the long-term roadmap.
  • Reminder to contribute ideas to the Gazebo Rotary artwork brainstorming document by 2026-06-12T00:00:00Z.

Updates

Package Updates

  • gz-math: Merged a pull request to cache vertices and edges (gz-math#771), but decided against backporting it as upcoming Entity Component Manager improvements will bypass the need.
  • gz-common: A pull request to optimize texture image decoding and channel conversion (gz-common#817) is under review. This optimization is expected to improve texture loading times by 5% to 10%.
  • gz-physics: A pull request has been opened to implement AttachFixedJointFeature and DetachJointFeature in MuJoCo. (gz-physics#1001).
  • gz-gui: A fix for a Grid3D CMake warning on non-Linux OS (gz-gui#770) has been implemented and is currently under review.
  • Memory Allocation: Discussed implementing a mechanism to avoid redundant memory allocation for identical textures across models by passing a unique name or hash from gz-common to gz-rendering.

Infrastructure & Buildfarm

  • Removed the flakyTest plugin from the build farm to resolve high RAM usage.
  • Continuing work to automate branch protection rules across Gazebo repositories using Terraform, with a vote in progress to adopt the repository.
  • Planning to use Anubis to protect the build farm from scraper attacks.

Documentation

  • The Rotary documentation pull request (docs#685) is nearly ready. The PR currently adds Rotary as a separate directory in the docs repository; if anyone has concerns or disagrees with this structure, please chime in on the pull request.
