ROS News for the Week of July 27th, 2026

:japan: ROSCon Japan in Tsukuba is happening next week! We’re really looking forward to seeing all of the cool projects happening in Japan right now.

Our next ROS By-The-Bay will happen on Thursday, August 13th, at the InOrbit Robot Space in Mountain View. We’ve got some great speakers lined up, including InOrbit CEO Florian Pestoni, my colleague @Andrew_Symington, who will tease his new ROS Central Registry, and Ramon Yvarra, who helped build a working Johnny 5 replica that runs ROS.

arm
Check out this great series on how to build a 6-DOF (5+1 Gripper) robotic arm with ROS 2 and an ESP32 for under US$50. Additional details and CAD files can be found on the author’s website.

Q8bot_10s
One of the coolest things I saw at Teardown last week was the q8 robot. The q8 is a dead simple open source hardware and software quadruped that consists of eight Dynamixel servos, a battery, a BMS, and an ESP32. It doesn’t run ROS 2 just yet, but it should be pretty easy to get microROS running on the ESP32.
