Hello rustaceans! 🦀

The next ROS Rust Working Group meeting will be: 2021-01-20T15:00:00Z

> **[Google Meet: Online Web and Video Conferencing Calls | Google Workspace](https://meet.google.com/adt-ifsf-qbn)**
>
> Use Google Meet for secure online web conferencing calls and video chat as a part of Google Workspace.

Just a reminder for those who aren’t yet on our matrix channel, we’ll be catching up again after a holiday hiatus, same weekday and time as before. The agenda is rather light, with some folks interested in colcon-cargo updates, as well as alternatives to cmake for message generation.

> **[GitHub - colcon/colcon-cargo: An extension for colcon-core to support Rust...](https://github.com/colcon/colcon-cargo)**
>
> An extension for colcon-core to support Rust projects built with Cargo

>
> Having to include and recompile all the message types any rust project requires …is kind of a non-starter:

> Are there anyways we can improve upon this, like upstreaming \`rosidl\_generator\_rs\` as one of the default IDL generators, or reusing IDL files generated from \`rosidl\_generator\_c\`? How have other client libraries such as \`rclpy\` worked around this? Are there memory safety considerations we should account for? Already I've encountered memory leaks using rclrs that could have been prevented by rustc and RAII.
