ROS 2 L Name Brainstorming

Lucid is a no-go! Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Index of /releases/lucid
While Ubuntu could go ahead and stomp on a ROS release with 23.04 Lunar Lobster (a short term release), I think we should be avoiding Ubuntu adjectives.

And everyone remember that Loggerhead was the ROS 1 Lunar turtle, it’s already spent!

That said -

Lucky Leatherback!

It’s so good! What a good sea turtle! Getting up to 2.7 meters and 500kg, it’s a giant!

I like Lemony a lot :lemon:

Really digging lucky for an LTS release :crossed_fingers: :four_leaf_clover: :pool_8_ball: :lady_beetle:

Going with Lucky Leprosa and +1 to Lucky Leatherback

Although if permissible Lil (Little) could be a fun adjective which also minimize keystrokes :grimacing:

Here are my proposals:

  • :heart_on_fire: Lusty Laura, from the Laurasichersis
  • :four_leaf_clover: Lucky Laura (it would be nice to have a proper noun for our ROS’ mascotte!)
  • :crossed_swords: Lethal Leviathan, from the Leviathanochelys, inspired by the mythological creature Leviathan

Lusty Leytensis

Laconic Leviathan
Lugubrious Leviathan

Has probably been suggested already, a name in the spirit of cartoons, “Looney Leatherback”.

I also like:

  • :monkey: Lonely Lemur (a solitary turtle-lemur crossbreed), from the Lemurchelys
  • :ring: Luxurious Lara (another proper noun!), from the Larachelus

I propose the following:

Lush Leatherback

Lush for that rich, fruity feeling, and Leatherback, the largest sea turtle, giving a sense of scale and strength. We need more of that in ROS2 :slightly_smiling_face:

I propose the following name: Loyal Luth
Loyal: Trustworthy and dependable — perfect for an LTS.
Luth: French name for the Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), the largest of all living turtles.

Leathery Lute seems fun

I’ll add my support for Leatherback, with a few adjective suggestions:

  • Lasting Leatherback
  • Laughing Leatherback
  • Lazy Leatherback (maybe too close to Jazzy?)
  • Learned Leatherback (as in learn-ed, but maybe not obvious)
  • Leathery Leatherback (joking)

And my personal favourite: Lustrous Leatherback. I think ROS 2 Lustrous has a good ring to it.

Interesting. I specifically looked before posting mine and saw

Maybe worth highlighting this at the top if it’s an issue then?

I can’t speak to the AI image issues, but typically we try to be wide open on this portion.

In the next round, the PMC will "downselect " by removing things that we think could be problematic for multiple reasons:

  1. It’s very close to another codename (typically Ubuntu)
  2. It’s very close to another open- or closed-source project name
  3. It has copyright issues (No ROS LukeSkywalker, sorry)
  4. It is profane in one or more languages

But that doesn’t have an impact on this phase.

What about Leonardo Loggerhead?

  • Leonardo: From Leonardo Da Vinci.
  • Loggerhead: Another turtle specie.

Also, I find interesting other names presented like Lucid Leopard and Loyal Luth.

Layerd Lissemys

  • Has artistic and cultural symbolism of longevity and good health.
  • Imagery ideas: 3 stacked

Leaping Lutz (or Lutzae)

  • Etymologically, Lutz is short for Ludwig, which means famous.
