# 🏁 Ignition Dome officially end-of-life

Hi, community! 🔥

On December 2021, Ignition Dome reached its official end-of-life. Dome was [Ignition’s fourth major release](https://community.gazebosim.org/t/ignition-dome-release/669) and was supported for a bit over a year. Notably, it was the version used during the [Subterranean Challenge](https://www.openrobotics.org/blog/2021/9/27/darpa-subt-final-competition)’s finals.

Dome introduced rendering features such as [particle effects](https://ignitionrobotics.org/api/rendering/4.1/particles.html) and efficient [skeleton animations](https://ignitionrobotics.org/api/rendering/4.1/actor_animation.html), GUI widgets like [plotting](https://community.gazebosim.org/t/gsoc-2020-plotting-tool-for-ignition/619) and [lidar visualization](https://community.gazebosim.org/t/gsoc-2020-sensor-data-visualization/638), and new sensors like the [optical tactile sensor](https://community.gazebosim.org/t/gsoc-2020-ignition-gazebo-optical-tactile-sensor-plugin/618). It’s also the first version supporting [web visualization](https://ignitionrobotics.org/docs/dome/web_visualization), [parametrized SDF models](http://sdformat.org/tutorials?tut=param_passing_proposal), and the [Bullet physics engine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgx6Ecu3aFE&list=PL6FI-gIL5jiGlch_uoSVNhCFaZb9eoj1J). With Dome, the major versions of several Ignition libraries are also reaching end-of-life. Their latest released binaries will remain available at [http://packages.osrfoundation.org/](http://packages.osrfoundation.org/), but no more fixes or releases will be made.

Ignition Dome used to be the default version to use with ROS Melodic on [ros\_ign](https://github.com/ignitionrobotics/ros_ign); now the default version for Melodic is Fortress, and Citadel is also supported. There are no plans to release new `ros-melodic-ros-ign` binaries.

We recommend all Dome users migrate to a supported release as soon as possible, such as [Fortress](https://ignitionrobotics.org/docs/fortress), which is the latest long-term-support release. Be sure to check each library’s migration guide.
