How do I open the connector cap on an Ouster OS0-128 to inspect the internal ethernet connector? (fastener type unknown)

I have an Ouster OS0-128 with an ethernet connectivity fault, and I want to remove the connector cap on the base to inspect the sensor-side connector pins and internal ethernet wiring.

  1. Symptom and what I’ve ruled out:
  • I had lidar and interface box, I tried connecting different ouster with existing interface box, I got data, it’s working.
  • But issue is my existing OS0-128 not connecting, only inside laser light comming, but no data, As i tried with different interface box also.

This points to the sensor-side connector, hence wanting to open the connector cap.

Questions:

  1. For anyone who has opened an OS0/OS1 connector cap: what is the exact fastener type and size?
  2. Is the connector behind the cap a standard panel-mount part or Ouster-proprietary?
  3. Any precautions when refitting — gasket orientation, torque, pin alignment?

I’m aware this likely voids the warranty; Asking here first because Ouster doesn’t publish service documentation.

I’d recommend you reach out to our support at http://ouster.com/tech-support for more thorough help, but I can give this a bit of a shot.

The connector itself is a proprietary connector manufactured by SINBON (we generally refer to it as the SINBON connector) and is a board and panel mount connector. Since the sensor is sealed and glued shut to keep out moisture there is no way to replace it without damaging the sensor. Because of this we use a socket only connector on the sensor side which is much less likely to become damaged than the pin side of the cable.

I’d recommend checking that there are no broken off pins or debris stuck in any of the sockets. After doing that and reconnecting and powering it I would connect it to a network switch and check for any blinking lights indicating a valid ethernet connection. If you see data being transmitted, it’s possible the sensor is on an unknown static IP and can be found using a MDNS tool such as avahi-browse (or the ouster-sdk ouster-cli discover command) since the sensor advertises a .local domain on both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. If/once you find the sensor I would check for any diagnostics to determine if the sensor has truly negotiated a gigabit link or there is something still wrong with one/several of the pins causing it to downgrade to 100 megabit.

Quick heads up before you go looking for screws, that “cap” is actually a locking collet, not something bolted on. Ouster’s manual just says it rotates to lock. They don’t publish anything about taking it apart, so there’s a real chance you’re not going to find fasteners in there at all.

Also that connector is basically the seal keeping water out. That’s probably why Ouster stays quiet on it, once you crack it open, getting it sealed back up properly is not guaranteed.

You’ve already done the hard part ruling out the cable and the interface box, so this is starting to smell like a bad pin or corrosion inside. I would email Ouster with the serial number before opening anything. I think it’s a better chance of an actual fix than finding out what’s under that collet the hard way.
