CS student diving into ROS 2 and Gazebo, looking for feedback and community

Hello everyone, I’m new here and wanted to introduce myself and share my current focus.

I’m currently finishing up my CS degree and along the way stumbled into robotics software and simulation. I recently installed Ubuntu 24.04, added ROS2 Jazzy, and Gazebo Harmonic, and I’m teaching myself Gazebo from scratch to start running physics and navigation simulations. I kind of stumbled on this middleware from just tinkering in linux, and this field is just fascinating to me!

Since I don’t have a physical hardware lab right now, my work is 100% focused on software, coding, and mastering these simulation environments. I am treating my desktop as my entire proving ground.

I’m the only one in my current physical circle working on this stack, so I’m looking for a community to bounce ideas off of, share my progress, and learn from people who actually know what they’re looking at.

Looking forward to learning from you all. Any pointers on avoiding rookie mistakes with ROS 2 or Gazebo would be heavily appreciated, and maybe some tips on useful tools or concepts to learn.

Looking for community, ROS2 Jazzy

I will welcome you into the ROS “community”, although because the community is so diverse in geography and interests, I have to admit to not finding a single like minded soul to journey with.

(Claude keeps trying to convince me “it” cares about my robots as much as I do, but I don’t trust anything it says or the code it suggests.)

You mention Jazzy, which I have much attachment to from having participated in the Jazzy pre-Release Test Party, Jazzy Create3 messaging issues, attempting Jazzy RTABmap visual localization on the Raspberry Pi, and for the last 18 months running a 24/7 Jazzy TurtleBot4 clone “TB5-WaLI” that is teaching me about reality with Nav2 navigation around my home.

(Kilted-Dave has been re-incarnated this month as Lyrical-Dave, but has not had his group photo yet.)

TB5-WaLI’s Jazzy Adventure” has many of my hard learned lessons in ROS. The fact that there is only one project, TB5-WaLI, in the TurtleBot4 Discussions “Show and Tell” tag is a painful reminder that ROS community can be difficult to pinpoint sometimes.

There is an active ROS subReddit community to bounce ideas and hear what others are doing.

I’m sure your personal initiative in ROS will help your future employment search. I had a 50 year career writing software, and had to continually be teaching myself in the evenings to be one step ahead of every next assignment. My employers always felt they could put me on any team or lead any team with confidence of team success.

Make sure you put your work in Github and you will also find a wealth of ideas there.

Have patience with yourself, and persist in the areas that interest you.

Wow that’s one hell of an introduction. I can’t begin to think about the trial and error you had to go through to get those running, especially with Kilted-Dave’s re-incarnation lol. Haha at claude trying to be your buddy :joy:. I do intend to align my future employment goals with ROS 2, as I want to lean into the multi-discipline nature of this field. Thanks for all the links and information, I hope to see you around the community in the future, cheers.
